London, April 2023: SongLink founder David Stark organised and hosted a special Blue Plaque celebration for his former boss Marcel Stellman (1925 - 2021), the legendary songwriter and lyricist of such hit tunes as "Tulips From Amsterdam" as well as being the producer of The Goons' classic "The Ying Tong Song". The ceremony took place outside Stellman's former home at Montagu Mansions off Baker Street in London on April 23rd, followed by a reception in the building.
The special 'Music & TV Heritage' Blue Plaque was a longtime idea of David's, who worked for Stellman at Decca during the 1970's. "He was the best boss I ever had," he comments, "and we stayed close friends right to the end of his life. He was a remarkable man who achieved so much and connected with so many illustrious people in the fields of music and TV." Stellman, who passed away two years ago aged 96 on May 2nd 2021, is also credited as the man who brough TV quiz show Countdown to British television in 1982 after seeing French game show Des Chiffres et des Lettres (Numbers and Letters) whilst on business at MIDEM in Cannes. The show became the first programme to be screened on Channel 4 in November 1982.
Previous to this Stellman was International Manager for many years at Decca Records, working with such names as Tom Jones, the Rolling Stones, the Moody Blues, Engelbert Humperdinck and many other top artists. He was also a songwriter who wrote lyrics for many artists such as Petula Clark, Tony Bennett, Charles Aznavour and others, as well as being producer of The Goons, Edmundo Ross, Jess Conrad and other Decca artists.
