Congratulations to Norway's Alexander Rybak (actually from Belarus) who won the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow on May 16th with a record-breaking 387 points for his excellent self-penned "Fairytale." Congrats as well to veteran British songwriter/producer Chris Neil (Celine Dion, Sheena Easton etc) who ended up in 2nd place as one of the co-writers of Iceland's classy ballad "Is It True" performed by Yohanna. The UK's official entry "It's My Time" performed by Jade Ewen and co-written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Diane Warren came a respectable fifth, overturning the UK's abysmal record of recent years. However let's hope that the BBC doesn't give carte blanche to Lord Andrew to write all our future Eurosongs just because of this near-success with a rather average schlocky ballad. There are many other great British writers out there, like Chris Neil, who should be approached and encouraged to write next year's UK entry.
The Top 5:
- Norway - Fairytale / Alexander Rybak
- Iceland - Is It True / Yohanna
- Azerbaijan - Always / AySel & Arash
- Turkey - Düm Tek Tek / Hadise
- UK - It's My Time / Jade Ewen
