VETERAN SONGWRITER TONY HILLER R.I.P.

London, August 2018: Veteran British songwriter and producer Tony Hiller passed away on August 26th after a long illness aged 91. One of the great characters of the music industry, he was best known for co-writing and producing songs for Brotherhood of Man such as Eurovision winner 'Save Your Kisses For Me' and 'United We Stand'. An integral member of the SODS (Society of Distinguished Songwriters) and known by all as 'Bubalah', he was also a huge influence and mentor to many others over the years.

Born in London's East End, he began his musical career as a member of song and dance duo the Hiller Brothers, sharing the stage with his late brother Irving, and later appearing with many artists of the time including Alma Cogan, Tommy Cooper, Val Doonican, Matt Monro, The Shadows and many others. His 1970 hit, Brotherhood of Man's 'United We Stand', is considered a worldwide standard which has been recorded by over 100 different artists. Thirty years after the original hit, the song was popularised again by becoming a patriotic and spiritual anthem, and was used in the production of various network news broadcasts during coverage of the 9/11 tragedy.

Over 500 other artists have recorded Hiller's songs including Elton John, Olivia Newton-John, Andy Williams, Ray Stevens, The Miracles, The Hollies, Sonny and Cher, The Osmonds, Glen Campbell, Crystal Gayle, Anne Murray, The Fortunes and many others. Apart from winning the Eurovision Song Contest with 'Save Your Kisses For Me' in 1976, which was also the biggest-selling UK single of the year, he was also the recipient of six Ivor Novello Awards, six ASCAP Awards and a BASCA Gold Badge Award amongst other accolades.

SongLink editor David Stark commented, "Tony was one of the most loved and respected songwriters of the past 50 years. Short of stature but with a huge heart and hundreds of great stories, he was always willing to give advice to younger writers and had a great sense of humour. A mainstay of the SODS since it started, he'll be much missed by all his peers and everyone who knew him. Sincere condolences to his wife Leigh and all his family."
