DAVID STARK AT MIDEM 1976 - 2016
London, May 2016: SongLink editor/publisher David Stark will be marking the 40th anniversary of his first MIDEM visit in 1976 by attending this year's 50th Anniversary event from June 3-6 along with long-time German associate Ellie Weinert of Songs Wanted (Munich). "Back in 1976 I was working for Decca Records as International Press Officer", says David, "and my boss was legendary record promoter & acclaimed lyricist Marcel Stellman who's still a good friend today at the age of 91. Back in those days we were promoting Decca UK acts in Europe such as the Moody Blues and their solo projects, John Miles, Camel and many others, while this photo from Music Week was taken at the Decca international licensees' cocktail party at the Majestic Hotel, that's me on the far right next to Marcel."

In those days MIDEM was still held in the old Palais along the Croisette, a much smaller building than the current Palais de Festivals which opened in 1982. "I vividly remember the launch of Jean Michel Jarre's debut album 'Oxygen' in 1976," recalls David, "it was played live in the evening outside the Palais with green lasers pointing out over the bay, an amazing event which virtually everyone at MIDEM must have gathered together to witness. Other memorable shows I remember were Pete Townshend & David Gilmour in 1986; an incredible Stax show with Booker T, Sam Moore, Steve Cropper et al; the famous tribute to Marvin Gaye and other great galas. Plus many 'Best of British' showcases' and top nights in the Irish & Texan bars along with too many other amazing showcases & parties to mention!"
"I've always enjoyed gong to MIDEM to meet old friends in the business and make new ones each year," continues David, "in fact a bunch of us from all over the world always have a regular catch-up dinner which gets bigger every year. Ever since working at Decca four decades ago I've always been involved in the international side of the business, whether for Billboard/Music & Music Media in Amsterdam in the late 80's, or as boss of my own company SongLink International since 1993 - I can't believe where the time has gone but I'll be in Cannes as usual in June and looking especially forward to it for the event's big 50th anniversary. I might not have attended every single one like my good friend Peter Knight Jr., but I'm very pleased to consider myself a MIDEM veteran!"
